EWA'S STORY
After the war, probably in 1946, Ewa was brought from Poland to an Orthodox children's home named Fublaines in France. This institution was managed by Dr. and Mrs. Josepovitz and their daughter Handushka.
From Fublaines she and another boy were adopted by an American couple via Vaad HaHatzala of Agudath Israel, and brought to the States in 1947.
She was not sure if her first name Eva /Chave was indeed her original name. She did not know the names of her parents and grandparents. She did not know how and where she had survived the war.
A CLUE IN NEW YORK
Ewa found out that when she was adopted in New York in 1947, her name before the adoption was Ewa Margules.
A CLUE IN A SURVIVORS' LIST FROM 1945
In a list of 58000 Polish Jewish Survivors published by the Jewish Agency in 1945, we found "Ewa Margules, Dabrowa Gornicza". Dabrowa Gornicza is located 56 km S of Czestochowa.
A CLUE FROM A RELATIVE BY ADOPTION
During the last few years a relative has told Ewa that Ewa's adoptive mother once told her this story: During the war Ewa's biological parents gave her to a well-off childless Polish couple. After the war when different Jewish groups tried to locate surviving Jewish children, some group had found out that Ewa was a Jewish child staying with this Polish couple. The couple wanted to keep Ewa. According to the story, the Jews bribed the maid who then left the window open, enabling the Jews to smuggle her out in the middle of the night.
EWA'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE FROM SOSNOWIEC
With the help of good people, Ewa has now obtained her original birth certificate from Sosnowiec. It turns out she was born in 1942 as Ewa Margules.
Her father was Abram Margules, born in 1904 in Sosnowiec. Her paternal grandparents were Mordka Josek MARGULES born 1871 in Dzialoszyce - and Ester Rywka DANCYGIER born 1873 in Szczekociny.
Ewa's mother was Leja Sara MARGULES nee GUTERMAN born 1915 in Dabrowa Gornicza. Her maternal grandparents were Jankiel Josek GUTERMAN born 1853 Zarnowiec, Olkusz and Sura DANCYGIER born 1877 in Szczekociny.
POSSIBLE SIBLINGS
Abram Margules and Leja Sara nee Guterman were married in 1932, so it seems very likely that the couple had children between 1933 and 1941. Who were Ewa's siblings? Did any of them survive? What happened to the parents and the siblings during the war?
