SIMON'S STORY: I am the lone survivor from the family deportations from Belgium. The convoy details can be found in Serge Klarsfeld's book on the Belgian deportations. I was at Aishe-en-Refaile as detailed in Sylvain Brachfeld's book, and then in hiding in PERWEZ, a small town south of Brussels.
The elderly couple was very good to me and for some unknown reason I was with them until 1948, when HIAS placed me in an orphanage in Antwerp. There a distant relative found me and notified an aunt ,Mollie Eisig nee FINEL, that I had survived.
I came to the US on May 22nd 1950. Recently, I have found additional distant relatives in Helsinki and in Oregon.
I would like to know as much as possible about my parents, my brother and my other relatives. Perhaps there are still living relatives I do not know about?

THE PERSONS NAMED STEIL IN THE 1939 LVIV TELEPHONE REGISTER STEIL & Co, furniture merchants, ul. Wielkiego 28 (In 1935 the address was ul Kazimierowska 28 Same street, new name? Different streets with same number?) The listing of Adolf Steil, son of Hena Steil in 1898, is probably the same Adolf Steil Simon Steil has listed here with exact birthdate in 1898.
IS CZYLA CECYLIA? Cecylia Finel, daughter of Anna Finel, born in 1888, could she be Simon's maternal grandmother? That would mean she married at 18 and gave birth at 19.
WHY MEIZELES? Why iwas Simon's mother named Eliza Meizeles if her father was Hersch MOZES and her mother Czyla FINEL?
FERBEL AND STEIL The explanation for his father being named Adolf STEIL and not Adolf FERBEL is simply that the civilian authorities there and then only recognized civilian marriages, so when a Jewish couple married with a rabbi , they would not be considred legally married by the state, though of course among the Jews this was a completely kosher wedding. The children in such a marriage would be named after their mother, as if they were born outside marriage. Often, when the children used their father's family name despite this law, the authorities would mark this with listing the two names with a little "r" in the middle, meaning the first name was being used, but the second name was the right one, for the authorities. In this case Simon's father used his mother's maiden name.. |
